Selling Hazmat Products on Amazon FBA

Spray paintsIf you’ve been selling on the Amazon FBA marketplace for any period of time, you might’ve come across the term “dangerous goods” or “hazardous materials (hazmat)”. It’s not as ominous as it sounds, as many of these items are the same ones you’ll find in aisles of everyday retail stores such as Target and Walmart. This could be anything from household cleaners to cosmetics. The reason why Amazon considers them “dangerous” or “hazardous” is because they may pose a threat during storage, handling, or transportation. The two main threats are items that are flammable and items that are pressurized in aerosol cans. Long story short, Amazon doesn’t want their fulfillment centers to go up in flames or their workers to handle items that could explode. For this reason, Amazon came up with the Dangerous Goods (DG) FBA program.

The DG FBA program allows FBA sellers to be able to send in limited quantities of flammable and aerosol products, to be stored at Amazon fulfillment centers. In turn, these items will then be available for customers to order with Prime shipping. This allows sellers to easily win the buy box when they are in the Dangerous Goods FBA program, since every seller has to actually apply and get accepted.

This allows sellers to easily win the buy box, when they are in the Dangerous Goods FBA program.

Benefits of the DG FBA Program

  • Sellers get the Prime badge on their listings
  • Amazon will store, pick-and-pack, and deliver your products in 2 days or less
  • Sellers will see higher profit margins, when compared to Fulfillment by Merchant (FBM) fees

And best of all, it’s completely free to join.

How to Apply

Ready to become a hazmat FBA seller on Amazon? Unfortunately there is a waitlist and it does take a few months before Amazon will email you an invite. However, there’s no reason to not join that wait list RIGHT NOW:

  1.  Go to the FBA Dangerous Goods program page (opens in a new tab)
  2. In the “Manage Dangerous Goods Classification” box, select ” FBA Dangerous Goods program”, and click Next
  3. Select “Apply to the FBA Dangerous Goods program” and click Next
  4. Wait to be contacted. There’s no defined timeline, but it can take a few months. You can check your waitlist status by going through the above steps.

Once you’ve been enrolled into the program, be sure to check out my upcoming post on How to Ship Hazmat into Amazon FBA.
